Distributed Team Brainstorming
Welcome to a better way to brainstorm new ideas. This is a board that you can use to collaborate and share ideas with your team, no matter where they’re located.
Make the left-most list a place to identify the higher level initiative or problems you wish to solve.
Create a list for each round of ideas, and each person creates cards for their different proposed solutions. As you discuss them, move the “winners” to the next round.
Why use the "Disrupt" technique for brainstorming? Glad you asked!
We're constantly being pushed to innovate, innovate, innovate. "Push the envelope! Shift the paradigm!" Easy for executives to say, but... much easier said than done.
That's because coming up with good ideas is hard. Really hard.
Our brains tend to get into ruts. We look at things from the same old angle and use the same old thought processes. When you need to come up with truly original ideas, you have to shake things up a bit. Introducing constraints on brainstorming forces to think differently.
This technique is all about getting out of whatever mental rut your team is in. At the start, you'll think "broad" – anything goes, no limits. Then you'll introduce constraints, using "Disrupt" cards (see the attached PDF).
For example, let's say the problem is that we need a new "404 – error" page for our website. Now let's say we introduce the "humor" constraint. We then would brainstorm ideas for our 404 page have a bit of humor in them.
Every time a new constraint is introduced, it sparks new ideas because it forces you into a direction you haven’t considered before. By the end, you'll have a set of winning ideas you can start pursuing right away.
